The choice is mostly about ride height and luggage. The T-Roc Cabrio sits high, which makes the rougher inland roads towards Embonas and Profitis Ilias far less tiring, and it swallows two large cases. The MINI Cooper Cabrio is the opposite: low, quick to place on a narrow village street, and honest about only taking one large suitcase.

Between those extremes sit the Audi A3 Cabrio and the Opel Cascada — four proper seats, a settled ride at the 90 km/h limits on the eastern road, and enough boot for a couple travelling with a child. The Peugeot 308 CC is the outlier with its folding hard top, which is the one to pick if you want a closed, quiet car in the evening.

From May to October the roof stays down most of the day. The exception is the meltemi, the north wind that blows hardest in July and August, mainly along the west coast between Ialyssos and Kamiros. Between 12:00 and 16:00 in high summer the sun is genuinely strong with the roof down. Locals drive open early and late and put the roof up in the middle of the day — a habit worth copying, along with sunscreen on the left arm.

Rhodes Town's Old Town is pedestrian; park outside the walls near Akandia or Mandraki. Lindos cannot be driven into at all — the car parks are above the village on the main road and fill by mid-morning in season. Village streets in Archangelos or Embonas are narrow, which is where a smaller cabrio pays off.

The main east-coast road is fast and well surfaced. Inland roads are single track in places with loose gravel on bends; take them slowly rather than pushing on. Fuel stations thin out south of Gennadi, so fill up before the run to Prasonisi.
