Driving an Electric Car in Rhodes: What to Know Before You Book

An electric car suits Rhodes better than most islands, mainly because of scale. The island is roughly 80 km long, and the drives people actually do on holiday are short.

The part that needs planning is charging. This page is deliberately cautious about it: charging infrastructure on Greek islands changes quickly, and the only reliable source for what exists this season is the rental team themselves.

The distances are smaller than they feel

Rhodes Town to Lindos and back along the coast is roughly 100 km including detours. Rhodes Town to Kallithea and Faliraki is under 30 km round trip. Both are ordinary days for any current EV.

The one genuinely long trip is the southern run to Prasonisi and back — around 200 km with stops. That is the day to plan around a charge rather than assume one.

What to confirm before booking

Ask the rental team, before you reserve, what charging is available at or near your accommodation, and what the handover arrangement is — how the car is delivered and at what state of charge.

Check whether the property you are staying at permits charging. Many hotels and villas do, some do not, and this is the single detail that determines whether an EV is effortless or awkward on a given trip.

Where an EV is clearly the better car

Longer stays with a fixed base, where you do short daily runs to beaches and tavernas and return each evening.

Families: the electric cars listed here are all five-seat SUVs, which none of the convertibles are.

Anyone sensitive to noise. The inland roads through Embonas and the Attavyros foothills are a different experience without engine noise.

Where a petrol car is still the easier choice

Touring itineraries that change base every night, or a trip built around one very long driving day.

Short stays of two or three days where you would rather not spend any of them thinking about charging.

The electric cars available

Three are listed locally: the Volkswagen ID.4, the Volkswagen ID.5 and the Audi Q4 e-tron. All three are five-seat automatics with air conditioning and two suitcases of luggage space.

The ID.4 is the most practical, the ID.5 the sleeker coupé-roofed version of it, and the Q4 e-tron the most refined cabin of the three.
