The single biggest saving on Rhodes is calendar-based. A convertible in the last week of June or the second week of September costs far less than the same car in the first week of August, with better roads and warmer sea in September.

Per-day rates fall as the rental lengthens. Two separate three-day rentals almost always cost more than one seven-day rental, and you avoid two extra pickups.

Convertibles, premium models and electric SUVs are limited in number. Early bookings get both the better rate and the actual car; late bookings get whatever is left, which in August may be nothing in these categories.

An automatic gearbox is worth it if you are not used to hills and hairpins. An electric SUV is worth it if you are five people doing long days. A folding roof is worth it if the drive itself is part of the holiday. Anything else is best spent on dinner in Lindos.
