Rhodes is not a place for a very large saloon. Village lanes narrow without warning, Lindos is closed to traffic at its centre, and the pretty coastal roads are more enjoyable in something compact and responsive than in something long and heavy.

If the point of the holiday is the drive, take a convertible. Early morning and the hour before sunset are the two windows when the roof genuinely improves the journey; in the middle of a July afternoon you will want it closed and the air conditioning on.

If the point is quiet comfort, the electric SUVs are the more luxurious choice. They are the newest cars in the fleet, they are near-silent on the long stretch south, and one overnight charge covers most days of island driving.
